When you are upgrading your home, combining the luxurious warmth of underfloor heating (UFH) with a stunning real wood finish is the ultimate comfort goal. Thanks to its structural stability, engineered timber is the perfect partner for UFH systems because it handles temperature shifts much better than solid wood. However, even with premium oak engineered wood in Islington, homeowners can run into costly issues if the installation isn’t handled with care.
Over the years, we have seen excellent materials fail simply because of a few oversight errors during the fitting process. If you want a flawless, warm floor that lasts a lifetime, here are three critical mistakes you must avoid.
1. Turning the Heating On Too Quickly After Installation
Although we fully appreciate the appeal of immediately using the new heating system as soon as the installation process is over, this can lead to serious problems if done in a hurry. Wood, being a living organism, requires some time to adjust to its new environment. Should the panels be exposed to high temperatures all of a sudden, there will likely be warping or splitting of the wooden layers. Our recommendation to all customers is to give the flooring some time to settle naturally for about two days before increasing the heat gradually (1–2°C per day).
2. Trapping Heat with Thick Rugs and Heavy Furniture
Engineered wood is fantastic at transferring heat from your subfloor into your living room, but that heat needs to escape freely. A very common error is covering your gorgeous new planks with thick, heavy rugs or flat-bottomed furniture that sits flush against the floor. This creates a heat trap. The trapped thermal energy can cause the timber directly underneath to overheat, dry out, and break down the internal adhesives.
3. Choosing the Wrong Underlay
The layer hidden beneath your floorboards dictates exactly how well your heating performs. Using a standard, thick underlay designed for a regular carpet will completely block the heat from rising. For UFH systems, you absolutely need a specialised, low-tog underlay that allows thermal energy to pass through efficiently. While you might be browsing a generic laminate flooring sale in the UK, looking for cheap accessories, cutting corners on your underlay will ultimately cost you far more in wasted energy bills.
